The importance of lindos altstadt declined after the foundation of the city of Rhodes in the late 5th century BC.
We also met the owners who told us their family story and how much love they put into their cooking. As we enjoyed our squid dinner gazing out at the castle, we couldn’t help but feel like we were in a fairytale. This upscale restaurant combines Greek cuisine with fresh ingredients, putting its own twist on classic dishes. After a long chat with the owner, we found out that the same family has run Mavrikos since the day they opened. Mavrikos is not just one of the best restaurants in Rhodes, but all of Greece! First opening in 1933, this eatery in the main square is the pride of Lindos.
In the early 14thCentury, the Church of Panagia was constructed. Standing noble with its high walls walk inside to see its exquisite courtyard, covered in iconic hohlakipebble mosaic. The area around the ancient acropolis has been used for religious worship since time immemorial. However, the first real temple to Athena Lindia was probably Tyrant-Sage Cleobulus in the 6thCentury BC. Despite its upstart child, Lindos remained relevant to the Hellenic world as the site of important religious buildings like the Temple of Athena Lindia. A hotspot for visitors from the world over, Rhodes is overrun in the high season, when it’s hot, crowded and uncomfortable as people try to bank a bit of sunshine and hurry their way through the island’s fascinating history. In ancient times, the massive temple of Athena towered over the acropolis of Lindos Lindia, which took its final form around 300 BC. During the reign of the Greeks and Romans, additional buildings were completed around the temple. You will then walk down the Street of the Knights, where you will see the many inns once occupied by the crusaders. At the end of the street, you will arrive at the Archaeological Museum, formerly the Knights Hospital, the museum was built in 1440 A.D., and is the most well preserved building in the Old City. Variety is the name of the game on this vastly contrasted excursion.
The town may look small at first, but once you start making your way through the winding streets you’ll find it’s anything but that. Get lost in the maze of white-washed walls and cafes as you stroll around under the Acropolis. It’s hard not to enter the colorful bars and restaurants, and the shops have an abundance of clothing and souvenirs to take home. By the 4thCentury BC, that temple had been burnt down and subsequently rebuilt as the Doric Temple of Athena Lindia, at which figures like Alexander the Great offered votive sacrifice. This includes Chares of Lindos, who built the Colossus of Rhodes, and Cleobulus of Lindos (one of Greece’s Seven Great Sages) who went on to rule the city. Getting there from the Old Town involves crossing a path over the moat of one of the gates, where, if you time it right, you can enjoy a brilliant sunset. There are nine gates leading into the Old Town, which is divided into several quarters, including the Knight’s Quarter, the Hora, sometimes called the Turkish Quarter, and the Jewish Quarter. Later on, I see some of those children weaving their way in and out of the narrow alleys of Lindos. Almost all the alleyways are too narrow for a car to drive down.
