The third major disadvantage to using an electric stovetop is its inability to evenly distribute heat. Most electric stove tops have a thin aluminum or stainless steel rim that sits above a heating element. The heat can seep out of the sides of this rim and onto the cookout or other area you are cooking in. When you overheat, the uneven heat distribution results in portions of the cooktop being heated more than others. This can result in uneven cooking or a burnt food product.
The good news about using electric stovetops is that there are solutions that can be used to resolve the issues that come from using them. For example, some electric stoves have a heating element that sits above a coil that heats the air surrounding the coils. This allows the electric stove top to evenly distribute heat, so cooking times are fairly consistent. You also have the option of turning off the element if desired, saving even more electricity.
To cut down on your electricity use, avoid settings that automatically turn on your electric stove as you begin cooking. Instead, set the control knob to a position where you will not be touching the element when you begin cooking. Also, avoid setting the control knob to a high heat setting. Only ever use a medium heat setting on an electric stove. Lastly, remember that electricity uses more energy than it is supposed to, so if your electric stove uses more electricity than it is supposed to, take care of the issue by switching off while you are not using the stove.
